Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have references?

Yes, and more, some specific to your job. People pleased with work are usually happy to talk about it. We encourage a rough guideline about references: call one, give one.

Your site mentions projects over a wide area of British Columbia. Are these designs shipped out to local builders, or do you travel to build?

Both. Home is BC’s Sunshine Coast and travel is part of what we do. We prefer to build our own designs, mostly because we can make small design changes on site. Because we love to build, we prefer to offer the design/build package. As for small design changes, pre-design photos showing setting and existing structures are helpful but do not show many site elements that we can adapt to when on site.

My husband googled your name, Hunterstruct, and found a different site that must be yours too. Is it?

Yes, this is our archive site. “www.hunterstruct.com” provides more detail (mostly photos) about various work we’ve done. It also contains some building tips and thinking behind our designs, information that we didn’t include in our new site to keep it streamlined.

Your company obviously does a wide variety of jobs, large and small. This is unusual.

Yes we do, and it is. We try to meet all customer needs. For example, many of our larger jobs began with small structural repairs. As we offer a “one call for all” building service, it is vital that Hunterstruct is set up for variety. Also, building a variety of projects is interesting and challenging, which helps to improve and maintain our skills. Our philosophy of “Making Practical Attractive” applies to all jobs, big and small.

Last year, I contracted a company to build a deck for our cabin. We even checked their references, which were good. They were a no show, and we only have a six month weather window and not enough time there as it is. Can you guarantee you’ll do the work?

Of course, a guarantee is as good as the company that makes it. As Hunterstruct is in business for the long term, if we say we’ll do it, we’ll get it done. Production delays happen occasionally (faced with a three month wait for custom windows in 2008, we reframed for standard windows), but a Hunterstruct “no show” has not, and will not happen.

Do you do your own concrete work?

Most of it. We do slabs, grade beams, footings, and footing/stem-walls. We sub-contract for fine-finish slabs.

Do you do other kinds of repairs?

Helping homeowners get the most out of their homes and properties is what we do. Although we focus on structural elements and finishing, we maintain a list of preferred service companies including insect control, electrical, and plumbing services. Naturally, we have our favourite sub-trades.
